Rent a luxury Car in Saint-Raphaël
Saint-Raphael is a seaside city a few kilometers south-west of Cannes on the French Riviera. Located next to Fréjus, one of the oldest resorts on the coast, it is an evidence that wealthy Romans used to spend their summers here 2000 years ago!
Explore Saint-Raphael
Standing in the shadow of the red stones of Massif de l’Esterel, Saint-Raphael is nowadays one of the best resorts on the French Riviera. It is a very well maintained city with a small but modern harbor, restaurants and sandy beaches. There is a colorful old town behind the harbor, with narrow streets to explore, which has a daily fruit and vegetable market.
The Eglise San Rafeu
The Church of Saint-Raphael (Eglise San Rafeu) is one of the oldest buildings, towards the north of the center of the city and dating from the 12th century – although expanded in the 18th century – and with a watchtower which you climb for lovely views across the town. Built in the 19th century, another imposing building in the center of Saint-Raphael is the byzantine style basilica.
The Jardin Bonaparte
Located to the south of the harbor, you’ll find a large public garden called the “Jardin Bonaparte” which contains a large children’s play area and where photo exhibitions are sometimes held. If you head east along the seaside from the center of Saint-Raphael you’ll reach another largest harbor area called Saint Lucia. You can then follow the coast path to Boulouris and “le Cap du Dramont” and you’ll find a selection of smaller beaches and restaurants.
The Archaeology Museum
As well as ancient Greek occupation, there are also traces of the Romans occupation in the area. To learn more about, you can visit the Archaeology Museum in the presbytery of the old church. In more recent years it was Napoleon who brought Saint-Raphael to the public gaze when he landed here after his Egypt ‘adventure’. He set off from Saint-Raphael when he was first sent into exile, an event commemorated in a small memorial in the port area.
Head to the historic center – The “Quartier du Village”
A district of Saint-Raphaël called the “Quartier du Village” was once inhabited by the local farmers! Today you can walk a vegetable and flower market that is held there. Take the opportunity during your stroll to visit the Romanesque church of San Rafeu. Its presbytery now is home of the archaeology museum. Climb the 129 steps up the tower, and a superb 360° panorama awaits you. You’ll enjoy a fantastic scene from the summits of the Massif de l’Esterel to the picturesque village of Saint-Tropez – via the Roquebrune rock – giving you a breathtaking view of the emblematic Notre-Dame de la Victoire basilica and its Byzantine domes.
